This is a charming pub in a somewhat remote village, boasting an excellent traditional, rural-pub interior. The front door is signposted as leading into the 'Taproom', which it turns out is the main bar area. The room has a tiled floor, exposed brick and half panelled walls plus plenty of dark wooden beams across the ceiling. A large inglenook fireplace splits the room in two, with seating on either side, mainly in the form of pews and chairs serving a mix of table sizes. The servery is opposite the entrance and has a nice, rustic timber fronted counter with brick ends and a bar back dominated by some large cider casks, whilst blackboards list a wide selection of baguettes available at lunch times. A doorway to the right leads through to a tile floored side room with pews to the front and a fixed bench around the rear right corner, with chairs and low stools in support. There's a nice fireplace with an unlit stove to one side and the room has been decorated with various bits of equestrian/ploughing equipment, old paintings, a large clock, a rifle over the doorway and lots of horse brasses.
There were three cask ales available - Bowman Wallops Wood and Black Drop (£5.80 a pint) and Goffs Lancer - along with two ciders from the wood. I was greeted by a very friendly landlady, who warned me that the pub was cash only before pouring my pint, which turned out to be in excellent shape.
It was a bit of a trek to get out here from the Basingstoke-Tadley bus stop, but I thought it was well worth the effort, as this is a timeless rural pub that rewards with its fine interior and top quality ale. I could quite happily have spent much longer here and might have done so had I enough cash left for another pint - I imagine you could enjoy a good session here and the villagers are lucky to have such a good pub as their local.

Latest visit, of several since my last review found the pub as good as ever in fact it gets better every time, It ticked over nicely through the covid years when it was allowed and remains unchanged inside as does the cash only policy. Three beers on the handpulls on this visit, two of which slid down nicely sat next to a fully stocked log burner, both the Irving Frigate and Church End Gravediggers Ale easily achieved NBSS 4.5, excellent value in these parts at £4.10 a pint, the third, untried beer was Longdog Bunny Chaser. Not the easiest of pubs to get to but more than worth it and now gets upgraded to a rare 10/10 for me.

A welcome (and unexpected!) revisit. No changes since my last session, this time saw 4 ales on (two straight from the barrel and two from pump). For a bit of comparison I tried one from each dispense method (both Otter beers) and struggled to tell the pump beer from the barrel one, so good was the condition (NBSS 4). An absolute cracker, any self-respecting pubman must make their way here at least once.

Recent revisit found things ticking over pretty much as they have done since 2009. Managed to lose bar billiards from a winning margin of 400. The fact I made no notes of what I had to drink gives you a further clue as to why. Still an excellent place well-worth seeking out. Note that this is a cash-only pub. Rated 9

Very English low-beamed country pub - open log fires, quarry tile floor, brasses, old plaster walls, church pew seats with a good atmosphere and friendly staff. One or two of the locals seem a bit sniffy if they don't recognise you as a regular but they are a small minority, most are fine and expect visitors outside of the immediate area. A decent selection of beer (Ringwood Boondongle; Rebellion Blonde; Branscombe Branoc) is on, served in good nick from either handpump or stillage. Basic food (baguettes) available. Other features are darts, bar billiards. No TV or music, just chatter. Gets better with each visit, a really lovely country pub. Rated 9
