A medium-sized 1960's pub located up on Portsdown Hill, mainly notable for the superb views over Portsmouth and the Solent from the strategically-placed picture windows and the large beer garden outside. It could be a quite superb pub, but although it ticks most of the boxes, it doesn't quite make the top tier. The decor is a bit bland, the menu is GK corporate and of the three ales on only Doom Bar was available, Ghost Ship and TT Landlord being unservable for some reason. The upper floor, which probably has even better views, seems to be reserved for functions. To be fair, the food was excellently cooked and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Still worth going, just for the views though.

This is a very good pub, excellent food, choice of 5 hand pumped bitters, 4 from different breweries, including local brews from Irving & Co Brewers in Portsmouth, Spitfire, Adnams Broadside
There is also, to my untrained eye, a good selection of lagers, wines, cider etc
Large open bars a lot given over to dining tables, plenty of space though for easy chairs to lounge in whilst chatting
Large & varied set menu + about 4 daily specials, all seem to be home cooked and freshly prepared from what I saw & tasted. Prices normally under a £10 but up to near £16 for large steaks & grills
Service was excellent, polite, prompt & helpful
Plenty of parking space, excellent views across the city
Do try it if in the area
Update 01 Sept 2009 - Went back on a Tuesday lunchtime, my word it is busy and noisy, due I suspect to the wooden flooring & hard surfaces echoing, unable to hear anyone speaking
Service was very slow initially, only one person behind bar at 1215, this increased to four later on
From this visit I now downgrade it from 4 stars to 3
