An old fashioned but slightly run-down looking roadside inn, this makes a very pleasant stop on the main road if you happen to be passing. The front room looks like it has been put together from several smaller ones, to judge by the arrangement of beams and pillars, and the fireplaces set at opposite ends, and the modern bar now occupies the back wall. A dining room further to the left is mirrored by one to the right, which also seemed to be a pleasant room from what I saw of it on my way to the toilet. Most other customers at the time of my visit were here for food, but I didn't note prices or portions so can't comment on that. I chose Wadworth Henry's Original IPA over the other option of the same brewery's 6X available on the three hand pumps. Not one I would go out of the way for, but I did overhear some people who had driven out from Bristol to eat here, so perhaps it's more of a destination pub than I would have made it.

A well known gastro-pub on the main road north of Tetbury, it’s an attractive old Cotswold stone building and I suppose may have been a row of old cottages at one point. Given the fact that appeared to be no houses nearby, it’s inevitable that food will be the main draw here, and there were a number of restaurant guide stickers on the front door.
The main bar is in the middle and this had wooden strip flooring, a sagging old ceiling with a couple of beams keeping it up, a fireplace and lemon paintwork with wood panelling on the lower part of the walls. To the left was a slightly smaller room, with a parquet wooden floor, large stone fireplace with a great pile of logs and an unusual semi-circular glass fronted cupboard recessed in to the walls that was displaying a selection of old wine glasses and decanters. To the right is a slightly more formal dining room with whitewashed stone walls and a number of floral drawings. There is also a small beer garden at the rear which looked to be a pleasant spot.
As previously mentioned, food is of the gastro-pub genre, so if you’re after Bangers & Mash or Scampi & Chips, then this isn’t the place for you. We called in on a lunchtime and were only after a sandwich – the nearest thing to that on the menu was Smoked Sardines with Chorizo on Bruschetta. That said though, it was a pleasant enough dish and not unreasonable value at just under six quid, although that was for the smaller portion size.
Beers on tap were a somewhat unadventurous Wadworth’s 6X and Henry’s IPA. The solitary cider was Stowford Press.
