A pleasant pub tucked a little out of the way, but only a short drive from Malmesbury, like Jon I hadn’t particularly planned on stopping here but the intriguing and unusual name drew me in. A notice on the wall explained that the name came from a Victorian novel, and some unusual wrought ironwork above the bar counter included a cat and there was also a real one wandering around. The only custard related item that I spotted was an old Birds advertising sign.
Internally it has a fairly rustic feel but perhaps with some more contemporary features as well. There is dark wood flooring, black beams on the ceiling and plenty of exposed stone walling. The bar counter was quite attractive with some decorative woodwork and inset blue panelling, whilst there was a small stone fireplace off to the right, and a larger dual aspect chimney breast to the left with a wood burning stove which separated the lounge and dining areas of the pub. A selection of pewter tankards and china jugs hung from the beams and there were a few horse brasses dotted around. At the rear was a further room, although other than a glimpsing TV screen and an oar hanging on the wall, we did not investigate this.
A quick glance at the menu showed a good selection of pub grub dishes such as Scampi & Chips, Pie of the Day, burgers and so on, and these were mostly priced somewhere around the £12 mark. There was also a small board on the bar counter with a selection of sandwiches listed.
Beers on tap were Flying Monk Elmers, Hooky and Wickwar’s Bob. Ciders were well represented with a trio from Weston’s – Old Rosie, Henry Weston’s Vintage and Stowford Press along with Cidersmiths, which was a new one on me.

Been here twice in a week now and I think it was clearly the name that attracted me to go. Upon entry there is a bar to the right with seating behind as you stand at it. To the left is a few tables but mostly set up for food. Further left is another area of tables and once at the bar you see a back bar again with tables made up mostly for food as all seemed reserved on my visit and judging by the smell of the food it's not hard to see why.
A few hand pumps serving Gem, Hooky and Doombar were the bitters on. A front beer garden is also present and upon today's visit was greeted by a car park complete with Doves or white pigeons you decide.
If in the area for Westonbirt Arboretum /Tetbury for antique visits it's well worth a visit/detour when you see the sign for Shipton Moyne although not the opening hours in the week are dinnertime and evening opening.
