A nice, multiroom, Wadsworth's pub quite a bit south of the city centre, it is much as Roger describes. It's GBG listed so the Waddy's is in the best Wadworth condition. Largely inhabited by couples out for a drink on my early evening visit. A very good suburban style pub in an area largely devoid of any kind of pub, so it gets my vote as well. Wadworth's range on pumps but a bonus on the barback it the form of three pins containing Titanic Anchor, a beer from the Isle of Wight and something unlabelled in the third.

The Georgian Grade II listed Linden Tree is about 10/15 minute walk from the city centre and whilst there isn’t much around nearby, the pub alone is probably worth the walk.
The interior is decpively spawling but there are several intimate nooks and crannies to be found. The carpeted front section is divided by an open fireplace and has low beamed ceilings and some exposed stonework. A few armchairs give it a comfy edge. The main bar area is quite narrow with a small snug opposite but it opens up again at the rear where there is a flat screen TV, some bookshelves and a full size skittle alley. A decent sized patio can be found at the front although it is a busy road.
The beers are mainly Wadworths with 6 ales on handpump (6X, Henry’s IPA, Horizon, Strong In The Arm, Bishops Tipple and Farmer’s Glory) as well as 3 guest ales direct from casks racked behind the bar (Island Yachtsmans Ale, Ruddles County and Butcombe Bitter on my visit). The collection of previous pump clips behind the bar is quite impressive.
The pub has been run by the same people for over 10 years so there is an element of stability and we found the service very friendly and efficient. Despite it looking a bit of a downmarket area, the ambience was quite relaxed and civilized on our Saturday evening visit. We were initially drawn to the pub for its reasonably priced accommodation which was comfortable enough and very good value. The included cooked breakfast was as good as anything else you will find in town.
Despite its slightly off the beaten track position, this is one of the better pubs for beer tourists but it should be noted that it closes between 12.30pm and 6pm midweek so plan ahead to avoid a wasted walk.
