The place was packed when I called in on a lunchtime. There had been a funeral and the deceased had obviously left instruction to wear a Liverpool shirt (Or something Red). Only Doom Bar on the ale front but it was OK. I didn't hang around for obvious reasons!

I don't often bother to visit hotel bars, so I was pleasently surprised when I paid a fleeting visit to the Kavern Bar at the rear of The Angel Hotel. You can access the bar, from St Johns Street. It is quite cosy inside, with wood pannelling on the walls and wooden floors. Pictures and nick nacks adorn the walls and nooks and cranies. There is a small seating area with leather sofas, which was quite pleasent to sit in. I ordered a small coke, in doing so I didn't notice any particuly good real ale, but there were the usual well known brands of lager on tap. Doubtless if I'd have stayed longer, the sports broadcasts would have irritated me, but it was a nice place to stop and escape the sun for a while.
