A prominent, stone built pub on the main A road between Cirencester and Tetbury it takes it’s name from the nearby source of the River Thames, and includes a drawing of Old Father Thames on the side of the pub. We didn’t investigate the source, but I understand that there needs to have been a period of heavy rain before there is actually any water visible.
Internally it has something of a country cottage feel to it, with a striking tartan carpet on much of the floor and some bare sanded boards elsewhere, plenty of black beams on the ceiling and some quite vibrant paintwork in shades of burnt orange and khaki green, although there were also some areas of exposed stone walling. The various interconnected rooms wrap around the central bar counter, which is clad with rough wooden boards. There were a couple of old stone fireplaces, although whether these are actually used or not was not clear, whilst other accessories included a number of shelves of books and a few pictures scattered around the walls, including a map of the Thames.
Beers on tap were all from Arkell’s with their Hoperation IPA, Wiltshire Gold and 3B. Ciders meanwhile were Gold and Haze from Thatcher’s. All in all, a pretty decent pub and certainly worth a stop if passing by.

This was a surprisingly pleasant experience given that it’s a roadside pub on a busy A road. The building is Georgian, it sits on its own in its own grounds which include a well-kept garden and a reasonably sized car park. Inside has been pleasantly renovated, open plan though with areas delineated. A central servery sits in the middle. One area is a comfy seating area with a fire, and there is a larger dining area. They offer a good variety of food – bar snacks served all day, and basket meals on request. There is also a high-grade special menu to complement the restaurant menu available in the evenings. The landlord was incredibly welcoming, while the barmaid showed extreme tolerance when being messed about by a couple of idiots who didn’t get the concept of restaurant food not being available at 3PM. Snacks were available for dogs as well. It’s an Arkell’s house, so the ales were all from that Brewery: 3B, Gold and Hoperation, all in excellent condition. Keg options were Moretti, Peroni, San Miguel and 2 Thatcher’s ciders. This was a really enjoyable visit and one worth repeating, maybe for an evening meal in future.
