A traditional looking stone built pub, just next to the village green (part of which seems to be used as their beer garden!) in this very pleasant village, it’s clearly had some extensive refurbishment and whilst it’s not unpleasant, it was perhaps lacking much of the cosy charm that might be expected in an old village inn.
The main bar area is at the front of the pub and this was quite contemporary with just some very old oak beams on the ceiling being the only indicator of it’s former life, and perhaps the stonework around the leaded windows at the front. Elsewhere the walls were predominantly fresh white plasterwork although there was also some whitewashed brick in places. A modern looking fireplace was at one end church candles were recessed in to small alcoves on either side. An old flat iron was on the mantelpiece and a hoe was fixed on the wall above. Seating was a mixture of old church chairs and fitted benches scattered with plenty of cushions, whilst most of the chunky wooden tables were reserved for diners, even here in the bar area. A smaller room to the right had a wood burning stove with a pile of logs stacked up next to it, whilst up a few steps to the right was the dining area.
Beers on tap were both from Arkells with their Wiltshire Gold and 3B, whilst a third pump appeared to have run out. The cider meanwhile was Thatcher’s Gold. Overall, with it’s friendly staff and pleasant location, this was certainly a nice pub, but the slightly over enthusiastic refurbishment spoilt it a little for me, and it’s probably more the sort of place I’d go for a pint or two in the garden on a summer’s day rather than settling in for a good session.
