A pleasant surprise at this old pub, which has been much extended at the rear into what looks like a typical family dining pub, with a children's farm and a neatly-tabled restaurant. Find your way through to the bar at the other side and you are transported back in time, in a traditional room with a quarry-tiled floor, large fireplace and some old wooden settles, as well as a few rustic locals. Beers on pump were Butty Bach (in excellent condition), Dartmoor Jail Ale, Tribute, Doom Bar and one clip reversed.

A pleasant looking part thatched pub with good sized gardens on three sides, animals appear to be something of an attraction here with not only a fish pond near the rear entrance and a dovecote at the front, but a mini farm in the rear garden with occupants including ducks, hens, goats and even a pig. Perhaps these are designed to attract younger visitors and whilst there were also some kids play things in the garden, these were tucked down at one end and not at all intrusive. A wooden shack in the garden selling ice cream was also an unusual feature, although unfortunately this was not open on my visit.
Internally it consists of a pleasant bar at the front, with the rest of the pub being given over to a restaurant. The bar is quite traditional with red quarry tiles on the floor, rough plasterwork on the walls, quite a low ceiling and a large brick fireplace at one end with a few horse brasses on the mantlepiece and a couple of brass plates on the chimney breast. A few old black and white pictures were dotted around the walls whilst the seating was mostly old church pews. The rest of the pub consisted of tables all laid up for dining and a notice on the bar counter saying that it was table service only, although this did not strike me as a gastro-pub by any means. The décor looked a little dated rather than on trend and “refurbished” as in many places, but was not at all unpleasant with old flagstones on much of the floor.
There was a good choice of beers on tap with Wickwar Bob, Hobgoblin Gold, Doom Bar, Dartmoor Jail Ale and Otter Amber. Ciders too were well represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Haze, Stowford Press and Symonds Founders Reserve. All in all, a pretty decent pub and well worth stopping by if you’re in the area.
