As the White Lion this was a fairly ordinary Charles Wells pub, but then the lease was taken on by Banks & Taylor and the name change coincided with its heyday as a real ale pub offering something different at this end of town. I seem to recall that included late closing, which added to the popularity. When B&T surrendered the lease after the business ran into difficulties the name was retained. The pub closed in 2018 has been converted to flats.

Reported today that work is proceeding to "strip out" the pub and plans are being submitted to convert the building to flats.

I called in here to see if they had any real ale. One hand pump on the bar, with a Wells Eagle IPA pump clip. Could be worse, I suppose, so I asked for a half. Sorry, I was told, it's not ready yet - how about a half of smooth. No thanks, I replied, maybe another time.
