Closest pub to Colchester station, the Adnams signage is misleading,I couldn't find any Adnams ales available on my visit. There are two seperate rooms,to the front a public bar with a good darts throw and a pool table to the side of the servery. At the rear is a larger tap room with a small inner snug with sofas,a raised area leading to a conservatory.Doors by the bar lead to the carpark and some outside seating. There isn't much furniture, most of which is functional rather than ornate and there is a lot of room around the bar for vertical drinking.
It's a solid boozer but does reasonably priced pub grub. The flatscreens will show BT and Sky Sports, there is a weekly quiz with occasional acoustic and band nights. The three handpumps were drawing Doom Bar and Colchester No.1 and Jack Spitty's (NBSS 3.5,pleasingly £3.60).Rightly featured in the GBG 2022.
I liked this pub ,down to earth and a proper community feel, this is a good place to start or finish a crawl if visiting Colchester.

Occasional visitor, as I have family in the area therefore usually try to fit a visit in. Very welcoming, good range of ales, caters for diners, drinkers and sports fans alike. Recommended.

Large multi-room pub just up the road from Colchester (North) train station. I stopped off here after an evening game at Colchester's ground prior to getting my train home. The main, central room has lots of dark wood beams and panelling as well as a fair bit of seating, with additional tables and chairs in adjoining rooms. The place was packed with football fans, so we headed into the smaller games room, which had its own bar as well as a pool table, dartboard, games machines and TV screens which were turned off.
There was a fine selection of beer available, dominated by Adnams, to whom this pub is tied, but with a good selection of local guests. Adnams Bitter, Lighthouse, Gun Hill, Old Ale and Broadside were on alongside Meantime Pale Ale, Green Jack Trawler Boys and Norfolk Black, Fullers London Pride and Batemans Mild. I tried a pint of the Norfolk Black (a Christmas winter warmer) and a half of the Batemans Mild and found both in top condition, justifying the presence of a number of CAMRA certificates on the wall. A Crones real cider was also available. All beers are listed on a couple of blackboards in each room. We were served by a very efficient team of bar staff who dealt with the crowds at the bar expertly and found time for a bit of banter with their customers.
This was the final pub of my Colchester crawl and to be honest I wouldn't have bothered if we hadn't just missed a train, but I'm very pleased that I did visit as I thought this was a very nice pub which I would happily return to, preferably on a non-football day.
