The right-hand side of Gray & Sons Orange Tree has open plan seating with a fireplace on the right-hand wall above which sits a large television that was off. This is faced by a serving counter up the left that supports three hand pumps, one of which was in use drawing Mauldon’s Mole Trap. Spotting more hand pumps through the counter I decided to wander into the L-shaped left-hand bar, where I ended up staying. Another seven hand pumps in here were drawing Mauldon’s Silver Adder, Chelmsford Brew Co’s Cool Bay, Colchester Brewery’s Sweeney Todd and Kent Brewery’s Hygge. Intrigued by the Hygge Nordic Stout, pronounced Hooga according to the pump clip, I decided to have a half with a Kronenbourg; to be honest I preferred the pint after a varied mix of drinks throughout the day. I noted a powerful burner on the left-hand wall and a dartboard in the left rear corner. I thought the governor was very friendly and I enjoyed this visit, so I’d make a detour to revisit.

The Orange Tree is a backstreets local, which was comfortably cool and quiet on a warm afternoon, with my pint equally chilled (the "cellar" here is in a back room with the refrigeration humming nicely).

There's a total of 11 hand pumps on the bar - grouped 7 & 4 between 2 rooms, with 7 in play today. All of the ales are listed on a blackboard. The keg offer is strictly mainstream lager and Guinness.

The beer was predominantly local on my visit, though a few hundred pump clips over the walls and ceiling indicate the breadth of the ales served in recent years.

A thoroughly worthwhile visit. It's a long walk from the station, but you'll be glad you made the effort.

Fairly simple alehouse, black white and wood, though some of it has succumbed to the cancer of the grey paintbrush. Of note are the circle of pump clips on the ceiling, though it appears a lot of décor mentioned in previous reviews has now gone – new licensees. Darts and TV football available. If there was a second room available I didn’t spot it. Six ales on over seven pumps, my Harvey's Mild was possibly a bit of aspirator (I’ve had it fresher in Harveys pubs, anyway) but just ended-up as GBG par (NBSS 3).
