I wasn't expecting much from this pub with sits at the end of the village green, but it easily exceeded my expectations. Entering from the front left corner, there is one long room. At the left-hand end is a carpeted dining area, with a raised area near the window overlooking the car park and the green.
At the other end is a bare-boarded bar area with a bricked in fireplace. The long bar is inscribed with "A quart of ale is a dish fit for a king". I've no idea where this saying originates from. Fake greenery above the bar and high on the walls helps create a cosy feel. There is also an outdoor drinking area to the rear.
There were 5 handpulls on the bar, with 3 clipped. The selection was Nethergate Stour Valley, Mighty Oak The Henge & Bishop Nick 1555. Keg beers included Greene King Level Head & Hazy Day. The cider was Aspalls. I tried the Henge, which was in good condition.
Food looked like standard pub grub. Dogs and children are welcome. There was a canine menu behind the bar. A couple of large TVs were on opposite walls at the bar end, but were switched off. Pop music was being played and BT Guest Wifi was available.
