Blue Scrumpy left this review about The New Inn

The New Inn is one of those timeless classic pubs. Even the customers appear to belong to a different era, although I think some were my age or younger! There are a couple of entrances at the front. The one to the left is signed as the hotel entrance. Although, this place seems to have long ceased offering accommodation. Instead the entrance on the right-hand side leads into the main public bar, with a small snug off to the rear.

The pub has the feel of crumbling both inside and out. The front room is fairly simple, with 4 large ceramic spirit casks (for gin, brandy, whisky and rum) behind the bar and being a standout feature. A few pictures of steam engines can be found on the walls with the pub hosting a steam engine rally on 31st May/1st June this year.

On the bar, the beers are all from Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter & IPA are the regulars. A third handpull was clipped with their Dark Mild, with the fourth vacant. Ciders were Weston's Vintage & Inch's. A delivery of crisps, nuts and other snacks was taking place when we arrived, making access to the car park tricky. Pies also appear to be popular here with one of the locals tucking into one when we arrived.

After taking our seats, a lively political discussion ensued with a fair amount of disagreement and debate providing us with adequate entertainment. Before leaving, we had to check out the outdoor toilets. The gents is quite simply a wall to pee against, reminiscent of some lower league football grounds 20-30 years ago. I admired the moss coming off the urinal wall as I was in full flow!

Whilst this pub is a very basic one, it has retained all of its character and is well worth seeking out. Opening times are on the door. For some reason, weekday opening is at 1pm on a Wednesday with later (or none at all) opening on other weekdays. I believe it opens at midday during the weekend.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The New Inn

A step back in time here, to the 1950s (or even earlier, whenever it last had a lick of paint), and restricted opening hours to boot. The limited seating in the narrow bar along the frontage is supplemented by a small rear room (looking like something one might see in domestic rather than commercial premises) and on a couple of wooden picnic benches out front. The left-hand part of the building apparently contains a function room, but the separate front entrance was firmly locked. Other facilities include the heritage outside toilets, which - in the gents at least - are as basic as I can remember for many decades. Beer-wise, I found three Harvey's real ales being served from the bank of four handpumps: a fine Dark Mild (£3.50), IPA (behind an old Pale clip) and the ubiquitous Sussex. All rather splendid!

Popped in for a beer on an unscheduled stop-off due to our tour organizer realizing it was listed as a heritage pub.

The signs on the outside aren't promising - the paintwork is peeling and the pub sign is falling apart. When you venture inside, you find a similar story. There's a lot of dilapidation in the big front bar that needs addressing; the old bits of wood, real fire and ancient brewania don't really compensate for the fact that the place is a bit of a dump - it needs a lot of TLC (just a lick of paint would be a start) but there is a nice pub waiting to spring out as some of the uploaded photos above testify. Oddly, the only part of the place which has been done up to any great degree is the back room, which only hosts a pool table which takes up all the space - so much for the drinkers!

Beer-wise, there were two ales on; Harveys Sussex Best (average) and a Tom Woods (Bomber County I think) which went off almost immediately when we arrived...no great shakes.

All in all, I could only say it's worth popping in for a swift half at present but I really hope that someone can take hold of this place and turn it into the pub it could and should be.
