Another one where last review was 13 or so years ago! This is a hotel with a couple of bars, very pleasant places to sit with plenty of natural light from the large traditional sash windows. There was another area on the ground floor turned over to a restaurant but no one eating on my early evening visit here.
This is clearly no longer a GK pub with no GK quaffs available (and their pub locator seems to confirm that). From a bank of 5 hand pumps on the bar, only two were operational dispensing Harvey’s (my choice and perfectly well
Kept) and TT Landlord. Typical keg options.
I struggled to warm to this place. I suspect it has seem better days when on-line photo galleries suggest it had much more interesting beer choices. Indeed it looks like a second bank of hand pumps on the bar where everyone present on my visit congregated has been removed. The staff (manager and young lady working behind the bar) were vibrant and nicely interactive with customers (many of whom I assume are locals) but this place just didn’t have the X-factor for me.

The Wellington is a pub with a comfortable saloon bar on the right and a separate public bar on the left. There is a projector screen in the saloon side for big games and the public bar has three plasma screens, which is probably one too many for its size. There is also a dartboard and a jukebox and unlike the saloon the walls are decorated with signed football and rugby shirts. At the rear of the pub there is a food serving area and all of the seats were set for dining, although no food was laid out during my visit just after lunchtime on Monday.
On the drinks front there is a standard and premium draught selection alongside six hand pumps. Being a Greene King pub IPA and Olde Trip were both available during my visit, but there were four guest ales available and I’d not heard of any of them.
Even though quiet, I liked it in here and would have no problem returning.
