Before becoming The Stoneham I think that this place was called The Portland Hotel and then the Portland Rock Bar. It is now a Brakspear pub and pizzeria that was very busy with early twenty something diners when I visited during a recent Saturday evening visit. Thankfully it still retains a little of a pub vibe and the bar supports three hand pumps that were drawing Brakspear Original, Oxford Gold and Hobgoblin. There was also an extensive selection of premium lagers that one would expect from a pub full of uniformly chopped logs. Past the open kitchen at the rear there is a small beer garden that strangely has a red telephone box in it.

To be honest I wasn’t that impressed as an open plan pub full of people eating pizza isn’t really my idea of a great night out. Maybe if I’m in the area and feeling a bit peckish I’ll revisit this pub, but I wouldn’t go in just for a pint again.
