The Setting Sun is tucked away off the beaten track, but it was still reasonably busy when I visited on Tuesday evening a couple of weeks ago. There are a couple of picnic tables on the path out the front and a sign gives the winter opening times of 16:00 until 23:00 Monday to Wednesday, 16:00 until midnight Thursday, midday until midnight on Friday and Saturday and midday until 23:00 on Sundays. Potential passing customers are enticed in with the promise of lovely views across Brighton from the rear terrace, but the back door was locked when I popped in. However, I did look out of the rear window and can report that there are some nice views of the lit up town; maybe this is why the pub is called the Setting Sun.
The pub is U shaped with an extra seating area at the rear by the exit to the terrace. The lights were dim and most of the illumination came from candles on the tables. Food is served and I was surprised to see all of the mains coming in under £10 as this pub has a gastro feel. The bar is stocked with San Miguel, Kronenburg, Amstel and two hand pumps that were drawing Hogs Back TEA and Wyre Piddle Brewery’s Piddle in the Cold. I asked for the TEA, but the affable governor directed towards the Piddle which was pretty good. I didn’t spot any TVs and if there is one I doubt very much if any sport ever gets shown on it.
I think that the hard work being put into this pub is paying off and I would certainly have no problem returning for another subdued pint on a cold January evening.

Left Basketmakers, crossed grand parade, hiked up the very steep morley & sussex streets, reached the Setting Sun(pretty much an estate pub)completely out of breath, to find a chalk board outside pronouncing the beer garden was open; it wasn't, the pub DOESN'T OPEN UNTIL 15:00 MON-THURS! The view doesn't include the sea, just the hilltop properties to the West. I can't give it any plus points & won't be back.
