I had the opposite experience to the previous reviewer, walking in at just after 4 on a Tuesday afternoon to find a totally empty pub. One other customer turned up while I was there, but he drank his beer even quicker than I did, and when I left at 4:25 the pub was empty again. My half of Black Gold from Kent Brewery was very good (NBSS 4, £4.40/pint), though it wasn't even close to being black - more like the colour of dark tan shoe polish, though thankfully not the flavour. (Two other cask beers were listed on the blackboard, and the lass who served me was cleaning the lines for a fourth, but no pump clips are displayed.)

Following a recent recommendation from one of the previous reviewers, I tagged this place for a sharpener before attending a Heaven 17 gig last night, given that so many of the surrounding pubs have been crushed by the wheels of industry.
Arriving at around 7.00pm, I was presented with a venue that was so small that I could barely get over the door jamb for the sheer number of people just queuing at the bar, the folk music trio taking up much of the precious seating; I decided to save it for later. On returning at 10.10 pm, I found a venue which had an agreeable level of customers but was told by the manager ‘I close at 10.00 on a Sunday’. Why? There were plenty of punters in and I overtook customers making their way here after a Daryl Hall gig at the nearby Brighton Centre, the same potential customers entering the pub that I passed on leaving.
This place may superficially offer much in the way of temptation, but ultimately its lack of space means that it’s also a waste of it too; I should have taken advantage of the other recommendation, the neighbouring Lion & Lobster.

This pub has reverted back to its original name, as according to one of the locals we met, it got its name from a hatch that was once in the front of the pub. The hatch was used to serve the local fishermen through, as they smelt slightly after a fishing trip at sea.
We called in here on a Thursday afternoon which was to our advantage, as this pub can get very busy and the interior is quite small. The interior was very comfortable, the landlady was chatty and friendly and all their beer was superb. Five pumps with four in use serving Siren Circle Back, Rivington Clouded Eyes, Kent Tropic Stout and Brisol Beer Factory Milk Stout, along with three ciders from Ascention, Pilton and Little Pomona. Am definitely going to return to this one!
