The pub was named in 1880 in recognition of the efforts of the Brighton, Hove & Preston Constant Service Water Company in bringing clean water to the Victorian town.

Located in the Hanover neighbourhood, so get your climbing boots on, this is a corner building in the back streets with a garden out the back. It's a Harvey's outlet, so expect to encounter Sussex and 2 other cask ales - today these were Mild & Good Times, the latter being Sisters Table Beer rebadged for the locally based pub operator. There's also a couple of Harvey's keg beers alongside the macro stuff (Guinness, Cruzcampo, Neck Oil and so on).

Food includes pies and sausage rolls, while music comes from a record deck behind the bar. The bar manager was somewhat underemployed mid-afternoon, but she couldn't be faulted for friendly service, and the reservations placed discreetly on the tables indicated a busier evening ahead.

I liked it in here and would be happy if it were my local.

Nice little backstreet Harveys pub, one for the locals, basic yet charming. Two beers on, Sussex Best and Wharf IPA plus a Rosies Pig Cider. Rugby was on TV. Nice enough.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Constant Service

Came across this appealing Harvey's corner pub by chance, en route to another Hanover pub that had been recommended to me. Attractive rustic (but well maintained) wedge-shaped interior. Notably friendly welcome. Five of six handpumps in operation, offering Sussex Best, Armada, Wild Hop and the seasonal Porter (£2.10 for a half, and in excellent shape) plus Henry Westons cider. Only had time for a quick stop, but very glad I found it.
