Will Larter left this review about The Brick

I hadn't planned on coming here but the sign caught my eye from the corner of Western Road so I had a look. It's a modern bar with a welcoming vibe, and three hand pumps visible from the street, so in I went. The lass behind the bar was friendly, as was her only customer (6pm Tuesday), who said "best pub in Brighton". I raised a sceptical eyebrow, but after being charged just £2 for a half of Adnams Old Ale I echoed the praise. To be honest, it wasn't the greatest beer (NBSS 3), but as the lass said, there's no rip off prices for real ale here.

Background music was ok, ambience was good, and if anyone wants to see how to do an exposed brick and rubble wall with taste and artistic merit, this is the place to come.

Moby Duck left this review about The Brick

A single quite plain room with an unexciting white and dark green colour scheme, there is a mix of resonably comfortable seating giving a feel of a micropub without quite achieving it. The bar is on the far left hand wall and has three handpumps with two beers on plus an Ascention Cider, my beer of choice was Burning Sky Aurora served up in excellent condition. This place is more craft keg based With Twenty Taps behind the bar with a good range of styles including Czech and German Lagers. It was very quiet on a Saturday afternoon with only a couple of customers in, maybe down to location. I would give it another look.

Steve C left this review about The Chequers Inn

Chequers is a single room pub that feels more like a large living room with a bar in the far left hand corner. There is a standard draught selection and the three hand pumps were drawing Forty Niner, Hobgoblin and Addlestone’s cider. Food is served and the roasts on Sunday are available from midday until 18:00 and cost £9.50 including ‘afters’. Fondue parties can be pre-booked for those that like cheese that much. The ale, Fosters and Kronenburg are £3 a pint Monday to Friday from 16:00 until 19:00 during the ‘easy hours’. There was a rowdy group of students in during my visit on Monday evening, but this is the livelier part of town so this was to be expected. There was still a friendly atmosphere and I was made to feel welcome by the friendly governor. There is no television, but some background music was playing at an acceptable level.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to wander down Preston Street again, but if I did this would be my venue of choice.
