Previously the Fleur de Lys, this village inn occupies a building with 17th Century origins, whose timber frame and irregular floor, the latter mostly flagstone or carpeted, can still be seen in many of the rooms. The ground floor has largely been opened out to form a contiguous series of rooms and bar areas, while various brick fireplaces – mostly recently restored – punctuate the space. Outside, there is a small, cramped carpark and a number of gravel-floored seating areas dotted randomly around the grounds. The current owners are Hall and Woodhouse, and they have been generous with their corporate colour scheme, even to the point of removing much of the greenery which once decorated the external walls. The pub is dog-friendly, there is free WiFi, a selection of newspapers, and they intend to run various entertainments including a Summer beer and cider festival. The food was well cooked and tasty, but suffered from trendy chips (only 12 in a portion – I counted them) in a silly galvanised tin and taking an eternity to arrive due to inefficiencies in the ordering process. The Antipodean staff were friendly enough, but their false bonhommie grated after a while, and my female companion railed at our being repeatedly called 'guys'. The beer was good albeit also slow to arrive – two draft Badger ales on plus a selection in bottles. I had a pint of Hopping Hare which was in very good condition. If you aren't in a hurry it's a good enough place to seek out for lunch and a pint or two.
