A small town pub with limited opening hours, this pub hosts music acts and karaoke when it is open, mainly attended by elderly (and tone-deaf for the most part) locals. The snug bar at the bask was empty, apparently unused apart from irregular drop-ins like us, while the front bar, whose raised stage supported the aforementioned noise-makers, was fairly packed. We had the audacity to try and sit in the bar when we came in, only to be asked to move as we had taken someone’s regular perch. There was also a tiny courtyard garden behind the pub, complete with dirty plastic furniture and puddles. There was a rather sad-looking collection of old sports trophies, but little else to give an indication of what might have been. Next to the keg taps were hand pumps dispensing Old Rosie, Dartmoor Legend and Jail Ale, so all was not lost. I don’t think I’ll be rushing back or recommending this one to anyone I like.

Now we are heading towards the autumn, Mondays, and Tuesdays, down at the Duke are quiet.
On the first Monday of every month there is a cheese night, anyone is welcome to join in so long as they turn up with some rare pieces of cheese.
Wednesday night there are a few more people.
Thursday night there are a lot more people.
Friday and Saturday nights it is like the Black Hole of Calcutta.
Sunday afternoon quite a few people come especially if there is sport on the TV.
Live music every night apart from Mondays
All types of music rock pop and folk
