A Victorian village pub once known as The Lime Tree. The red brick building stands in the centre of the village and provides a social hub, and it’s used by the whole village community. In addition, though, it has a restaurant and is GBG listed. The restaurant area is a bit sterile (in the atmospheric sense, rather than a food hygiene way) and out of character, being more modern and having laminate flooring and bland walls, giving it the ambience of a town centre curry house but with better food. Outside, there is very limited parking at the front. There is also a small terraced garden which includes a children’s play area and a patio for smokers. There is a skittle alley at the back which can be booked for functions. The single bar is much more pleasant than the rest, carpeted and with black and white prints of the village on the walls, an early Victorian fireplace at one end and a convivial atmosphere. The landlord was very welcoming, though some of the locals were a bit aggressive. Children are banned after 9pm, while dogs are encouraged. Food is high-end pub grub, plus they do theme nights – Pie Night, Steak Night, Hot ‘n’ Spicy Night (at least I assume that refers to the food) and the inevitable Fish Friday, plus Sunday roasts at lunchtime (there is not food available Sunday evening); prices are reasonable, and all food is cooked to order. Four ales on were Bath Gem, Cerne Abbas Ale, Doombar and Tribute, plus Orchard Pig cider. The ales were in excellent condition, making this a good venue of choice, well worth deviating from the beaten track to find.
