When in doubt in a new town, I always look to what is in the Good Beer Guide. This is the 2026 entry. Armed only with the name and google maps, this was not quite what I was expecting. I thought maybe a micro-pub or a brewery tap room.

It is a small pub - multi roomed and with three external picnic tables (commandeered by the smokers). It is just as renowned for its food as its beer. Which meant that every table was reserved.... but as we arrived before midday (11am opener) - all empty, waiting for the 12:30pm, 1pm reservations to appear. This resulted in a very unpubby game of musical tables - as it was packed on a Friday - and every new entry was going from room to room looking for a free table. And then moving, if a better option came up than the one they were squatting at.

Beer-wise, there were just three cask on today and the keg options were very uninspiring. Madri, for example. I went for a very nice Flacks Taiheke IPA. There was plenty of discussion and holding to the light on the quality of the Neep Tide.

Is it a good pub? Very probably - especially if you catch it at a less manic moment. For us today, it was all a bit chaotic.

Still not a fan of pubs where every table is - and can be - reserved. And today's newspapers are full of Westminsters plans to ban vertical drinking :-)

What a great pub! 4 ales on the bar, and not one of them Doom Bar (a pleasant surprise in this town). Breweries getting the nod here are Otter, Hop Back, Sambrooks and Woodshedding, who I presume are local. I was charged just £4.20 for my initial pint, which reinforced my initial positive impressions.

Internally, you've got flagstone floors and a multitude of wooden tables across several rooms. There's a bit more space outside as well.

I happily stayed for a couple before the 5 minute stroll to the station. If some of the folk in here could be dissuaded from playing noisy nonsense on their phones, it'd be even better.

Multi-roomed old pub with good range of beers and noted for food. Slightly disappointed as aiming a bit too much at the tourist market, but nonetheless well worth a visit. Cask Marque listed and regular Good Beer Guide entry.
