A fine Edwardian country house which has been surrounded by the expanding town of Dorchester and is now a Marston’s Two-for-One pub. The ground floor has been opened out to form a single large bar/dining room, and it has consequently lost all its historic character. There is a good sized car park in what was once a pleasant, large garden. You enter through a side door and are greeted by a flunky who looks downcast when you explain you just want a beer, not a meal. Ales on were all from Marston’s – Ringwood Razorback, Hobgoblin and Pedigree. There was a fourth handpump, but it was dry and had a tempting false clip on which turned out merely to be an advertising badge. The beer wasn’t in great condition. There is a gaming machine but not much else by way of entertainment, unless you count watching the unruly children running around. Probably OK for a Sunday carvery, but not a pub worth including on a crawl, at least not for its beer.
