A traditional Victorian back street local, currently owned by Marstons. At the side is a large outdoor area with multiple benches, tables and chairs, and there is a large smoking shack. Water bowls for dogs are provided, but dogs are only allowed in this paved garden area, not in the bar. Inside, there is a single large bar formed by knocking through previous rooms, though one part is raised. There is plenty of comfy seating, but plenty of space too at the bar for convivial drinking. Blue carpets make it feel more like a lounge than a pub, but it is nonetheless a good local. The barmaid was very friendly and helpful, but that didn’t extend to welcoming the dogs inside. Ales on were Flack’s Double Drop, Otter Head, Funky Monkey Not Quite Pale Ale and 4T’s WSB English Bitter. The ales were in good condition. The mega choices were Red Stripe, Estrella, Carlsberg and three Thatchers ciders. Food as also available at reasonable prices. Not bad as town pubs go, certainly good enough for an evening’s libation or a casual lunch.
