A very pleasant, traditional village pub, which genuinely welcomes visitors. Although only a few yards from the M5, it’s actually quite remote in terms of getting to it. It sits on a country lane which, apart from the constant traffic noise from the motorway, offers a fine rural setting. There is a rather scruffy and over-grown car park and a garden over the road from the pub. Inside, there is a long single bar room at the front, formed from the original rooms of the cottage building which forms the main part of the pub. An inglenook fire is at the right end as you enter, the tables are mainly set for diners, and there is a mezzanine with more dining tables at the left side. At the rear, in an extension, is a small public bar with a pool table, dart board, juke box and TV screen. The customers were all locals apart from us, and they were both chatty and friendly. The young staff were surprisingly professional and made us feel very welcome, especially ensuring the dogs were looked after. Food was traditional pub grub at a good price, complemented with Sunday roasts which are very popular within the village. One ale on, Wadworth 6X, plus a fairly standard range of keg. I’d be very happy to come back.
