This roadside pub is on the main Blandford-Shaftesbury Road and is easy to miss, but well it's worth stopping. Most of the U-shaped, brick-built building is 19th Century, and there is ample parking at the back and side. Seating and tables are at the front for smokers and al fresco drinkers, but the views aren't great and the road noise detracts from the experience. The building consists of two main structures which provide a labyrinthine layout consisting of several small rooms. One of these is in service as the village shop, a good example of diversification and an excellent 21st Century business model which has helped the pub survive where others have failed. Another chamber has a pool table. There is a bar-style menu on offer, but at restaurant prices which are difficult to justify. The walls are a mix of oak panelling and pine cladding/paint, and the floors are mostly wooden with a small tiled area. Wood burners in the fireplaces and an eclectic collection of clutter provide the décor. There were 4 ales on, all from Badger. I had a pint of First Call, which was in perfect condition, an excellent pint served at the right temperature. The young staff are friendly and cheerful. Worth stopping off for lunch in order to sample the beer, and their slogan – 'More than just a pub' - is quite apt.
