Previously The Conservative Club, this impressive building dominates the main open area in Gosport’s High Street. There is a large paved outside seating area at the front, mainly full of people vaping in all weathers. Inside, the cavernous bar area is open-plan, though there are a couple of obvious ‘theme’ areas including a neon-lit darts area and a couple niches with TVs showing live sport. Neon lighting features quite heavily in the décor, much of it purple or pink, which gives it the look of a Transylvanian knocking shop, an impression reinforced by some of Gosport’s weirder youth. Most of the remaining customers were normal under-30s plus a few dirty old men letching at the under 30s. The central servery looks like something from a Tom Cruise film, but it does have a wide range of drink offerings, and the young staff were friendly and efficient. Ales on draft were Theakston’s Best Bitter, which was very cheap but in poor condition, while Pride was also on offer, also very cheap and slightly better. There was also a dry pump. Heineken, Guinness, Inch’s Cider, Red Stripe, Alpacalypse, Brewdog’s Wingman, three ciders from Strongbow, Murphy’s Stout, Foster’s, John Smith’s, Moretti and Cruzcampo completed the line-up. There were also a lot of gins and cheap cocktails available. It’s nice to see a new pub opening and bringing in a wide demographic, but there are other pubs nearby that I find more appealing.
