Will Larter left this review about The Fargate
The Fargate opened on 22nd October 2025 - I don't normally go to pub openings, but saw that it was open when I was on my way to the Sheffield Tap, so had a look in on the way back. It was very busy, with lots of people who don't normally go to the pub on a Wednesday afternoon. I was in a scrum near the eight or so hand pumps for a few minutes, and spotted a couple of guests as well as Thornbridge. My pint of Jaipur was good (NBSS 3, £5), but not as good as I can get at the Thornbridge pub near where I live, the Hallamshire House. (A friend who was among the first through the door said the Jaipur was tremendous, but it was so busy that the barrel had been changed by the time I turned up.)
I was here again in December, but it was too busy, and I delayed my return until a rainy day in January, when it was deliciously quiet at around 4pm, but this exposed the shortcomings of the staff training, with some doing all the work and others chatting to their mates.
Six Thornbridge beers were joined by an interesting line up of beers from Yorkshire: Wilde Child, Kirkstall and Brew York, plus one from Lancashire: Manchester's Blackjack. Three Swords from Leeds was very good (NBSS 4), as was Jack in the Box from across the Pennines (also NBSS 4, but close to a 4.5), but at over £5/pint I'm not seriously thinking of changing my allegiance to Kelham Island, where beers of this strength have only recently crossed the £4 line. I was enjoying my beer and reading my newspaper when they turned the lights down at 5pm and came around lighting candles on the tables. No, no and thrice no.
