Latest Visit (24/9/24):
The White Lion has now re-opened under ownership of the community and is back in the Good Beer Guide. Stone walls and laminate flooring give it a fairly cold feel. The door had been propped open, which drew complaints from one customer who was getting cold. He ended up closing it.
I'd hoped to avail myself of fish and chips from a mobile van which visits the village on a Tuesday evening. However, the van has broken down! Undeterred, the business has been allowed to set up in the pub's kitchen and it was doing a roaring trade during my visit. The smell emanating from the kitchen was very enticing and was probably the reason that the front door had been propped open.
The fish and chips were proving so popular that I spent a little longer here than planned. Plates, cutlery and condiments are provided. I was happy to wait whilst drinking my Palmer's 230 (brewed to celebrate their 230th anniversary) and perusing some local Dorset CAMRA magazines.
Being a Palmer's pub, the regular beers are Copper & Tally Ho! A fourth handpull was clipped with Dorset Orchards First Press cider. Their Gold & Orchard Haze ciders were on keg, along with Palmer's Dorset Pale.
This seems to be a good example of a well-run pub that is clearly popular with the local community (and their dogs). For a Tuesday evening, it was very busy. Although I suspect the fish & chip business was a significant factor behind its popularity.
Original Visit (11/12/21):
The community have stepped up efforts to purchase this village pub and hoped to have it open in time for Christmas. However, it was still closed when I tried to visit this weekend.

A wonderful 17th Century village pub that has been recently refurbished. The pub sits in the middle of the village making it a natural focus for village life. There is a small beer garden hidden away at the back, and a couple of metal tables at the front. There is also a covered smoking area at the side. The single square bar is comfortable, carpeted and homely. There is an open fire one side, and a small TV the other near the dartboard. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was convivial. Three ales and a cider on draft – I had a pint of Copper Ale, which was in excellent condition. Food is freshly cooked and good value. Definitely worth a revisit.
