A bar in a shop conversion in a small parade in the housing estate that would have provided a decent shot at the castle if cannon could have reached that far in the 13th century. The owner greeted me as I entered, saying it's good to see a new face. It must have been a disappointment that I live in Sheffield and am unlikely to come here again, and I only asked for a half of John Smiths Smooth, as I had a number of other pubs to visit in Conisbrough and Denaby Main. (I didn't say that I never drink more than a half of this beer - what would Alan Winfield have said if I'd asked for a pint?) There are five keg taps on the bar counter, and a few bottles of the likes of Black Sheep Bitter displayed on the shelves of the bar back along with the usual spirits. We discussed how difficult the pub trade is, and I did wonder whether he was making a living at all. It's the pub's first anniversary this weekend - I hope he makes it to the second and more.
