E TA left this review about Duke of York
Originally a town centre pub before being isolated by the ring road, it became a nightclub called “Buddy’s”, then it was taken over by the Conservative Club. It reopened as a pub in 2023 though the Conservative Club branding is still present at the back end of the building. There is a large gravel car park at the back whose entrance is very close to the ring road roundabout so can be hazardous when entering or leaving. Inside, there is a single carpeted bar at the front with a large bow window. There is also a skittle alley at the rear, open plan with the bar; both are heated by a fireplace open on both sides. Both the bar and the skittle alley are served by a single wooden bar counter. There is a pool table, dart board and a couple of large TV screens. Although definitely a pub, it still feels a bit like a 1970s club house, complete with grumpy barmaid, heavy metal on the jukebox and dated décor. Two real ales on draft, Darkstar Hophead and Wadworth 6X. Also available were Guinness, Cruzcampo, Amstel, Carlsberg, Moretti, three from Thatchers and Inch’s Cider. Bar snacks are available at reasonable prices. It’s nice to see an old pub re-opened after so long, though currently it’s only open evenings.
