More of a cafe than a pub, there is a single, split-level room. Handpulls and taps are on a wall to the left-hand side, with no actual bar. Table service is in order. So you are soon approached and seated after walking through the door. The area nearest the windows appears to be the prime spot, as the bar enjoys fine views over Morecambe Bay and a railway viaduct. For our Sunday morning visit, all of these tables were already occupied. So we were seated in the raised area to the rear on one of three drinking shelves.
Walls are primarily exposed stone and there are some impressive modern chandeliers on the ceiling, in addition to flowers and pom poms. Pop music was playing in the background and they were doing a brisk trade in coffees and breakfasts.
The beer is good. There were 6 handpulls, with 4 regular beers from Lancaster - Amber, Blonde, IPA & Black, a new seasonal beer from Lancaster called Evoke & Butcombe Adam Henson's Rare Breed. Keg beers included Small Beer Hazy & Brooklyn The Stonewall Inn IPA. Ciders were Sheppy's & Somersby Blackberry. My Evoke was a lovely citrusy beer, quite enjoyable.
Certainly not a traditional pub but JJ Crossfield's has a better selection of beers than the 2 Thwaite's pubs in the village.
