In the posh bit of town along with your Giggling Squids etc. It’s an upmarket crafty place done in red and wood – why it is called Tonne (which is Norwegian for barrel) is unclear. No heating so too cold on a nippy early evening in March. 10 draft kegs, fairly safe for the average seasoned beer drinker but there was a Vault City Rainbow which was nice, 3 quid a third though; I think this is run with an eye on the student coin as opposed to being an emporium. It's fair enough but my chilly digits making these notes means I'm unlikely to revisit outside of warmer months, although its late-opening status means I’m likely to swerve in here if I want a nightcap after chucking-out time in the Corn Exchange (EDIT – this has now occurred!).

This is a craft bar, with temperamental screens showing what's pouring now and what's in the fridge. Service is friendly and prices are par for the keg course, even if the beers on offer weren't the most exciting. The music was ramping up on this early evening visit, so the atmosphere was fine and it seemed that the students were making their way here.

I've been in better and more interesting examples of the genre, so I'm not sure I'd pop in next time I'm in Leicester.

After the obligatory visit to Leicester's best pub (the Blue Boar) and an aborted visit to the Corn Exchange (last entry 11:30pm), I had sussed out that Tønne was open until 2am.

As luck would have it, my research had paid off and we found a reasonably lively craft beer bar in which to round off our evening in Leicester city centre.

The bar is not too large, with a number of high tables with stools scattered around the bar.

I recall that toilets were upstairs, where there was possibly more seating (I'd had a bit too much by this time to notice). Although, there are disabled toilets at ground level.

Beer lists are provided courtesy of Untappd on TV screens, which are handy.

Bar staff were a bit too efficient for us in our state. They seemed to get a bit frustrated with our indecision and the number of questions we were asking about the beers.

The beer list seemed to be veering towards the stronger end of the ABV scale. I didn't note down them all, but sampled Polly's Informal Edits & Round Corner Reverend Hooker. Others included Polly's The Hop Studio - Talus India Pale Ale, New Bristol Wonderland, Orchard Pig Reveller & Funky Fluid Gelato: Passion Fruit, Mango & Peach.

There were also wheat beers, lagers and cocktails.

The only decent place I could find serving unusual beers in Leicester city centre after midnight, I may well find myself back here again one day.
