This is almost certainly the best pub/bar I have visited in Alton to date. We were getting close to Sunday closing time (9pm) when we arrived. Often in such a case, you're not made to feel most welcome. But the welcome from the young barmaid was cheerful. We could easily have been the first customers of the day.
The interior is fairly modern with a long and thin room and the bar/cool room to the rear. Taps on the back wall provide the craft beers. There is a grey lino floor. Walls are dark green wainscotting and magnolia painted with one full of dog photos. A number of mirrors and plants create a nice feel. There is also some pavement area to the front, where a pizza van was parked.
Wifi is available and board games are provided to play. Events such as quiz nights, a book club, pottery painting, cocktail tasting and leather pet collar making were all being promoted. Something for everyone in the community.
I was there for the real ales and ciders. To that effect, this bar did not fail to impress. 3 cask ales were Stonehenge Heel Stone, Hop Back Golden Goal & Maverick Equinox. The cider list was extensive - Pilot Ascension & Mothership, Hogan's Panking Pole, Hazy Rays, Lonely Partridge & Libertine, Blackmoor Orchards Brickyard & Ridges Green, Purbeck Dabinett & Katy, Snail's Bank Rhubarb Cider, Pineapple And Pink Grapefruit Cider & Raspberry Ripple, Sandford Orchards Wild Cherry & Pulpt Ember. Craft beers were Anspach & Hobday London Black, Vault City Lil' Tropic, Deya Boost & Dizzy Heights PDA. A CAMRA discount is offered on both ales and ciders.
It is no surprise that this has been Hampshire's CAMRA Cider Pub of the Year for the last 2 years. Whilst I managed to try a couple before they closed, there were others I hadn't previously had and I plan to have a longer stay very soon.

A new bar run by a young husband and wife team. It's hard to pin down exactly what it identifies as, covering several bases it pushes Cocktails and wines as well as craft beer, both keg and cask. Three handpumps and six keg taps, there were four craft keg available from competent brewers along Lilleys Bee Sting, on hand pump there were choices from Disruption,Fallen Acorn and Longdog, all presumably qualifying as "locale". Its a long roomed high street shop conversion,complete with friendly Staffie, sandwiched between two banks, the decor is very nicely done but is it a micropub or winebar that sells beer, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and is certainly a further improvement to the town, well worth looking in for a beer. The serious beer drinkers in town will in my view still be heading for the nearby Ten Tun Tap House.
