Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Alexandra

I kicked off a return visit to Newport at the Alexandra, a Rhymney Brewery pub on the southern edge of the city centre. The single room interior is quite basic with parquet flooring, exposed brick walls on one side and a raised area to the rear. 4 TVs were showing motor cycling at quite a loud volume. There was a games machine at the side of the bar and also a fruit machine and a jukebox. Outdoor tables overlooking the pedestrianised street to the front were proving quite popular during our visit.

On the bar were 3 cask ales from Rhymney. The Export is a regular, whilst they also had their Bevan's Bitter and their Dark. I ordered a half of the Dark, unaware that they had a promotion for the month of September whereby you get a free half pint of any cask ale each day you visit. So, I was informed that my half was on the house. Ciders on were Aspall's, Strongbow, Thatcher's Gold & Carling Black Fruits. With my wife also having a half, the round set me back £2!

The barman/landlord was quite a pleasant chap and was happy to chat with us. I hadn't noticed the September promotion. So, it was really good of him to offer it to a stranger. My Rhymney Dark was in good condition. I suppose that if halves are being offered free, it will help the beers to shift and they will inevitably be in a better state.

Seems quite a lively place and we noticed that karaoke is held every Tuesday. Featured in the current Good Beer Guide and certainly worth a visit (especially until September 30th).

Quick revisit. Ordered a Rhymney Dark on cask, barmaid flicked a keg switch. Quick as a flash I jumped in assuming she’d mis-heard. Nope, it turned out said beer was on both keg and cask. After switching over to the handpull, the inevitable outcome ensued – a beer that hadn’t been shifting (NBSS 2). So beware when you go in to check that your choice isn’t duplicated onto the keg…

Converted by Rhymney Brewery from an old RBS bank branch in 2021, it looks a little foreboding from outside but inside is a tastefully modernised local full of old boys and a friendly landlord as wide as he is tall. There's some booth seating off left alongside rear and side spurs plus nice parquet style flooring. Several maritime prints are among the wall decorations which also include dockland scenes - the pub takes its name from Newport's Alexandra Docks. Three Rhymney ales, I followed the locals and got on the Export. £2.60 a pint! And tidy, too (NBSS 3.5). Newport is hardly awash with quality pubs, so this one is an immediate winner. It's GBG listed. Rated 7
