The last time I visited Conisbrough, this micropub was yet to open. When entering, I got the impression that they don't get too many passing visitors. It seems to be mainly a local crowd. Accordingly, they took a keen interest in us and we soon got around to discussing my hobby of pub visiting! The landlord and landlady are certainly a friendly couple.

As you enter, your gaze is instantly drawn to a large black and white picture on the opposite wall of 8 men local conscripted for World War I. There is a QR code next to the picture which you can scan for the full story. Amongst the other features were a collection of books opposite the bar.

4 cask ales are served. For our visit, these were Leeds Pale & Best, Abbeydale Asterion & Chantry Diamond Black. Timothy Taylor Hopical Storm was on keg. No food is served. However, there was a tub of sausage rolls and pork pies on the bar and these were offered round to customers including ourselves.

Music was playing and dogs are welcome. This appears to be just about the best pub in Conisbrough and it is listed in the current Good Beer Guide. I tried the Asterion. It was in good condition, but wasn't really my kind of beer.

A new micropub at the bottom of New Hill, it looks very smart both outside and in. It was quite busy at the time of my visit, mid-afternoon on a Sunday. On the back wall is a blown-up photo of a group of young men, all but one wearing flat caps - it can also be seen on the pub's Facebook page. Camra's WhatPub write-up says that they are local men who all volunteered for the first world war on the same day. The bar is to the right with quite a narrow space between it and the front window. A small group was standing there, though not by any means blocking access to the four hand pumps, and they were happy to allow me to join in their chat about local football. The beers are all local too - well, local-ish, if Bishop Aukland is allowed - and a glance at Facebook shows that this must be the regular beer policy. At the time of my visit there were beers from Hops & Dots (the aforementioned County Durham brewery), Imperial (from Meccy), Chantry (from Rovrum) and Aurora (from Ilkeston - this is how the names appeared on the blackboard behind the bar, but I pointed out that if they're going to put Meccy and Rovrum for Mexborough and Rotherham, they should have put Ilson for this one).

I went for the Imperial bitter, which was good enough though probably just past its best, and I would have stayed to try another if I hadn't had a schedule to keep to in order to do the other pubs before my train. I'll keep this in mind for a return visit. I forgot to ask if anyone knows what happened to the eight young men in the photo; perhaps there's a clue in the name of this pub?
