A tourist magnet for fast food and beer. The venue has Cask Marque accreditation but if the state of the long-unpolished hand pumps is anything to go by, there is precious little commitment to real ale. The house beer, as at their sister pub in Bowness, is from Tirril, the least competent brewery in Cumbria. I went for the Cumbrian Loweswater Gold, which was ok but a little green, with more fizzyness than is right for this beer. It's a multi-roomed pub on several floors, with the gents toilet at the very top. Plenty of others besides me had called in for just a beer - Ambleside is pub crawl central at weekends - but most of them had brought their dogs too, so that pretty soon I was surrounded. I decided to escape from this madness by going to one of Ambleside's many traditional pubs instead.

Multi-storeyed part wooden, part stone, part window, building in a development of old mill buildings that includes the Ambleside Tap Yard, a coffee shop and a clothing shop. There’s a fair sized patio at the front separated from the Tap Yard by a low wall, then inside the counter is on the ground floor with table and chair seating on three further half floors. It’s an old mill and some kit remains on the top floor ceiling by the gents. Space is pretty tight as Ambleside is a busy place. Four hand pulls dispensing local ales from Bowness Bay and others in reasonable condition. On the busy Saturday in September the young staff were running around like blue arsed flies, it was nearly full and not really a relaxing pub visit, especially with the curse of the handle jug to deal with.
