Finally got through the door after a game at nearby Hallam FC's oldest football ground in the world. This is a bigger than anticipated corner location, with the door on the apex of the approximately triangle shape, the bar counter ahead and a smaller room down a step or two to the left. Two hand pumps in need of a session with a tin of metal polish, and just Abbeydale Moonshine available. Everyone was drinking keg beers, so a couple of pints were poured and tipped away. My pint when it arrived was clear but slightly disappointing (NBSS 2.5, £4.50), especially after drinking an unexpectedly good one the day before in Chesterfield. Changing groups of locals show that this is a facility in good use, but it's up against three nearby (proper) pubs, and if I'm after a post match pint in future, it's not really going to be this one.

My first time in Crookes for longer than I care to remember, considering that I live just over a mile away, and I thought I might call in this one, which I had never been in. On approaching, it didn't look open. There's a notice board on the wall with the opening times: Thursday 4pm. Checked the time: just gone 5pm. Not being open at 5pm is not a good look when the word "early" is in the name.

This micro pub was formally a butchers shop. We met the owner and his girlfriend on our Thursday eve visit, we could have stayed in here for ages, as we were all having a good chat and a laugh and the beer quality was exceptional.
The owner told us that himself and a pal had done all the work themselves to kit the place out. The bar area finished in black with pine mouldings on the bar front along with a pine counter top.
Four craft beers, a large Budvar font and two handpumps with one in use serving Abbeydale Moonshine. All the prices were very reasonable, plus they have a happy hour so even cheaper beer. New opening hours, so check on Whatpub.
