Latest Visit 13/4/24:

I decided to give this bar another go. It was busier than my 2022 visit and we managed to creep in before a large, rowdy stag party arrived.

This was a perfect example of how a single visit to a pub does not always tell the full story. My last visit was marred by a poor beer. This time, the beer I chose was in a lovely condition. The 3 cask ales were all from Tudor - Black Mountain Stout, Skirrid Welsh Bitter & Cwrw An Blyth. The stout was excellent.

From being a fairly average run-of-the-mill town centre bar on my last visit, this proved to be my favourite one in Llangollen this time around. Upgrading my score to a 7/10.

Original Review 17/10/22:

The Liberty Tavern opened as a micropub but has more the feel of a cafe bar. Food is served, but most people on a weekday evening were drinkers.

The ground floor is partitioned into two nicely decorated areas. I didn't venture upstairs. Not originally on my shortlist of Llangollen pubs to visit, it was recommended to me earlier in the day. The selection of real ales available was a good start. 4 handpulls were all stocking Cwrw Ial brews - Limestone Cowboy, Kia Kaha!, Crank Private Idaho & Crank Young Gifted And Welsh. The Young Gifted And Welsh was billed as a dry stout but was in a very poor condition. There was no real cider.

Hopefully the poor beer was a one off, as everything else about this place appealed to me.

A bit bigger than your average micro pub with the main bar room and then a larger side room that wraps around the main bar. The barman explained that the partnership with Dovecote Brewery has now ceased so it is now an outlet for Cwrw Ial Brewery. In this respect Limestone Cowboy, Kia Kaha, Pocket Rocket and Crank Boomting were on from Cwrw Ial and the couple I tried were pleasant enough. Very friendly vibe and no problem talking to strangers in here.
The Liberty Tavern and Wine bar to give it its full name also does an interesting small plates food menu of small Spanish tapas plates and cheese, meat or vegetarian grazing boards.
Definitely a must visit when in Llangollen and when considering the pubs the town has lost in recent years this is a much needed addition to the local drinking scene.

Great little micropub showcasing Cwrw Ial beers with Pothole Porter, Limestone Cowboy and Kia Kaha on. Also a guest ale on. I tried them all and they were excellent. Great service, great beer. The pick of the pubs in the town for me.

Alan Hurdle left this review about The Hoptimist

Micro pub opened in former cafe by Cwrw Ial and Dovecote Breweries.
5 Cask Real Ales + 7 keg craft beers all served from bar taps. All beers are from small local breweries, mainly CwrW Ial and Dovecote but some guests.
On entrance, the bar is across the far corner of the square room. There is seating under the window and along the entrance wall by an ornate range stove. A single toilet (with disabled and baby facilities) is off this room. By the window, the staircase leads to an upstairs room with extra seating. This room has no bar but has its own toilet.
Current Opening Times: May change as trade settles-
Closed Monday
14.00-22.00 Tuesday to Sunday** (Closed Sundays for "Winter Season")**
