peter ashworth left this review about Captain Alexander (JD Wetherspoon)

The pub is named after the Scottish sea Captain Alexander Allan who founded the Allan Shipping Line in 1819, and rose from a shoemaker to a shipping magnate. The place is situated on James Street directly opposite the Liverpool pub and consists of one large room full of tightly packed heavy wooden tables and chairs. The beer choice i found very disappointing with there being 2 banks of 6 pumps, the one on the right had 5 fairly average cask beers with one pump not functioning, the one on the left had Ruddles,Abbot Ale Doom Bar and 3 pumps redundant with no clips on.
On a more positive note there is an attractive roof terrace albeit slightly on the small size, the toilets are on the ground floor and with most newly opened Wetherspoons pubs there are plenty of bar staff on hand.
