A rural roadside pub with impressive views of the base of the Quantocks. The building has 16th Century origins. There is a small car park at the side and a tidy garden with nice views down the valley. Inside, there is a carpeted main bar formed from four original cottage rooms, the fireplaces still visible, the largest one occupied by a piano, one behind the bar and one with a very pleasant open fire. There is a separate dining room at the side in a newer part of the house. Food is basic pub grub, freshly cooked. The welcome wasn’t great – the bearded barman was a miserable git who seemed reluctant to get off his backside and serve us, although the landlord arrived later and was much more sociable. Ales on were Otter Bitter and Amber, plus Butcombe Bitter and an empty pump. A boxed cider was also available. The beer wasn’t in great condition, but it was drinkable. Depsite its location I don’t see my returning too often, given that the beer and welcome were below par and dogs are not allowed in. It’s on the 2019 Somerset Ale Trail.
