Closed, reopened and renamed (was the Penscot) since Blackthorn’s previous review, this was a rare find – a traditional village pub with no frills which hasn’t been spoiled by the proximity of a tourist route. There is limited parking on the small slip road at the front, and there is outside seating in front of the pub. Inside, there are bars either side of the main door. On the right as you enter is a games room with a pool table and dart board. On the left is the main bar, mainly carpeted, with a huge TV screen, a selection of board games and a brick hearth with a woodburner. We were greeted by an elderly gentleman who appeared to live there, and who happily went to find the barman for us. Said barman was friendly and happy to chat. Dog treats were provided, and the beer was in good condition: Harding Amber and Oatmeal Stout, plus two boxed ciders from Cheddar Valley and Wilcox. Also available were Guinness, three from Thatcher’s, Amstel, Hawkstone Lager and 1664. It was a pleasant, relaxing visit which I’d be happy to repeat.

Attractive, prominent pub in the centre of the village. At one time it was a row of three cottages but now they've been knocked in to one and made a decent sized pub.
Interior is on the whole quite modern, and not what you'd call cosy, but it was pleasant enough and had a real fire. There's a good menu, and the food we had was decent, although perhaps a bit more resturant like than one should expect in a pub. Staff were friendly and chatty.
Beers were Potholer and Butcombe; ciders were Thatcher's Gold and Thatcher's Dry.
