Surprisingly large backstreet corner pub over two rooms. The left side as you enter through a lobby is a pretty desolate public bar made worse by a terrible paint job where the wood wall inlays have been painted in a style and shade best described as ‘Linda Barker breakdown grey’. To the right is a more appealing nautical-themed lounge bar with ships wheel, a large number of mounted shields, black varnish half-length wood panelling, upright piano and impressive copper lion rampant shields affixed to the bar front. Unfortunately, it needs TLC as it’s gone beyond lived-in and into shabby. A curio is that pub garden is actually situated across the road. Four pumps with three on - Wadworth 6X, Wells Directors and a good drop of Exmoor. Amusement was provided by a hilarious phone conversation between the landlord and the customer services department of BT Sport. Pretty quiet on our late afternoon visit and it all felt a bit bleak really. Perhaps it’s better later on? 5.5
