An amazing chintz fest of retro signage (many internally lit) and breweriana old and new. Even the TV is showing retro adverts – the snobs might dismiss it as tacky but I loved it. Underneath it all is a comfortable tidy pub which horseshoes round the bar with a modern (but still chintz-tastic) eatery off left. Comfy seating, with plenty of U shaped fabric banquettes. Four cask, 2x Sharps, St Austell Tribute and Dartmoor Jail (NBSS 3); as mentioned below, the old microbrewery element is as defunct as some of the brands decorating the interior. I’d thoroughly recommend a visit – it’s a free museum.

Firstly, the Hyde Park is no longer a microbrewery, even though there are signs either side of the entrance advertising that it is. Available from the three handpumps on the bar counter to the right of the entrance on my recent midweek early evening visit were Sharp’s Doom Bar, St Austell’s Tribute and Dartmoor’s Jail Ale. A premium keg selection was also available. Behind the bar along the right hand wall is a thin strip of seating served by a hatch in the back bar. Opposite the bar to the left are some tables and chairs that run along the left wall. Further left is a conservatory with additional seating that was being mainly used by diners. The cheeseburger is priced at £9.25. A television in here was airing muted Popeye cartoons whilst some low background music played. The ceiling in the conservatory is carpeted with old pumps clips. In fact the whole pub is thick with old pub and beer signs as well as car racing signs and cigarette branding paraphernalia. I found it to be way over the top and very gimmicky. Out the back of the conservatory, in the middle of a busy road junction, are some picnic tables.
The service was very polite and the customers harmless enough so I suppose this place is worth a look for its individuality.

This pub closed in Jan 2013 and was listed as an Asset of Community Value by Plymouth City Council in April 2013. It reopened after a major refurbishment sent the pub back to the 1970's, with period adverts adorning the walls and keg fonts along the bar and on high shelving.
Serves 5 real ales including their own Mutley Bitter.
