Old Boots left this review about The Underdog

Looking like the archetypal craft bar or dodgy micro, it has a bit more going for it. A small, square , exposed brick room with exposed industrial fittings, the counter is on the back wall and toilets are to its’ side. Seating is a mix of tall tables with stools and a trio of lower rectangular ones. Five pulls on the counter serve a selection of mostly local beers, Chantry on two plus a Thornbridge, a Kirkstall and one from Lakedown, of Sussex I believe. The bar back has 12 keg taps.  An Untapped type display above the counter and another by the door gives you the full range of choices. Decent quality so a reasonable three hander with three in a row here; the less blessed White Swan and the GBG listed Dronfield Arms book ending the Underdog. Most educated pub goers know it’s etiquette to return empty glasses to the counter but here they give you the option of taking a glass away for a donation to a cancer charity. Child friendly.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Underdog

A good double with the nearby Dronfield Arms. This space was previously a bar and before that a builders supplies and a car spares shop. The owner was very welcoming and talked us through their cask beer selection. A large flat screen listed all the cask and keg beers and what's coming soon.
The cask ale selection was Electric Bear Brewing Co Gizmo, Thornbridge Ashford, Triple Point Brewing Kramos, Chantry Brewery Special Reserve and Chantry Full Moon. Plus there was a choice of nine keg beers and a mix of lagers and IPA's. The owner also walked me a little way up the road to make sure we knew where to get the bus back to Chesterfield, a lovely touch.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Underdog

Single-storey bar with semi-modern furniture comprising six tall tables and three of standard height. Offers a variety of beers in a wide range of styles from two groups of six craft keg taps on the bar-back plus five handpumps on the counter for cask ales from Ilkley, Thornbridge, Shiny, Rudgate and Chantry's Steelos (£4.00). Unusually for places of this type, 70s and 80s was playing at slightly more than background level.

Will Larter left this review about Smiffy's Craft Ale & Wine Bar

Not really a micropub, with plenty of keg beers and wine as well as five hand pumps, but the owner runs it himself and takes the early part of the week off, so there are similarities as well as differences. I turned up at a quiet time and the owner (Mr Smith?) had time for a chat. He's had years of experience in the technical side of the brewing and pub industry, but this is the first time he's actually run a pub, I gathered. It's been open just over a year and doing very well. (Only opens Thursday to Sunday but "pays the mortgage".) I had a couple of halves, of which the Navigation beer was not terribly impressive but the Spitfire was spot on (see photo for other options at the time of my visit; the Facebook page seems to be kept well up to date too). Well worth a look in when in this part of the world, but note that only one train an hour (in each direction) stops here, and the buses are pretty slow.
