Micro run by Tollgate. Good use of the space over two levels with high seating at the front and lower at the rear. Modern-meets-trad interior with some old beams painted black and multi-stained plank servery. Four Tollgate ales plus craftykeg, my cask Billy's Best was in good nick if not a brew I’d ever fancy trying again (NBSS 3) much like Tollgate’s range in general, I’ve found. Worth a look-in and is GBG listed.

Tollgate Brewery tap in a rather odd-looking building because it is so much lower than any of its neighbours along the Market Square. Anyway, once inside, you find a smart micro-pub with two seating areas at slightly different levels (although there is a short ramp between them rather than a step). With five handpumps now on the counter, I found four of their own beers being served - including the Old Rasputin stout (£3.70, 4) - plus a guest. Six crafty beers are available from the hooped keg fount, and there is also a stillage in a small cool cabinet behind the narrow counter, so I guess that extra beers are dispensed by gravity during special events?

Excellent micropub well described below. Real Ale Ray may well be right about the tunnel as I had just visited Ashby castle and was told that there are several hidden tunnels leading out of the castle which have not been excavated.
On the beer front there was an excellent choice with a few from Tollgate brewery plus some interesting guests. Pork pies and scotch eggs on sale. I tried the Tollgate Ashby Pale which was in top form. I didn't have long but I could have spent hours in here. Well worth a visit.

Tollgate Brewery's tap house, this micropub is a true gem and I couldn't find a fault here, in any shape or form. This micro was previously a café for thirty years and opened as a micropub six months ago. This is a Grade II listed building and dates from the 1700s, lots of original beams and staircase at the rear can be viewed. There is also possibly a secret tunnel, that leads from the cellar and may reach Ashby Castle, further investigation may be required to prove this, for example knocking a small wall section through.
The interior has low ceilings and the colour scheme is dark grey and yellow. The bar area is situated on the left and a cask chill cabinet with sliding glass doors, makes up the side section. Four handpumps on the bar, plus three ales from the cask and six keg options. We went for the Tollgate Ashby Pale, which was superb and is brewed close by. There is also a bench where you can help yourself to free tea, coffee and water, very handy for those designated drivers. Also the staff are very friendly and welcoming.
