Sandford House is a large Wetherspoons housed in an old chapel and an attractive, and very solid, Victorian building that have been spanned by a less interesting extension. The serving counter is found in the chapel end where it runs along the outside wall under a high vaulted ceiling. Above the chapel entrance, that has a very heavy wooden door, is a gallery with some tables which obviously have menus. The counter faces a couple of rows of high tables beyond which is a sea of standard open plan seating that is found in the low-ceilinged extension. Steps at the far end climb into the Victorian building that feels a lot more like a standard Spoons. There’s lots of seating along the windowed walls and a smaller seating area with an impressive log burner is also available. Out the back is a large beer garden that I didn’t visit. On the drinks front, standard and premium keg was available alongside the usual three cask suspects plus Mad Squirrel’s Stimulus, Hawkshead Brewery’s Red, Hogs Back Brewery’s Creature Comforts and Bowman Ales’ Hop Hearted. I love the concept of making a pub out of two completely different buildings, but I think it could have been done better as the extension area is depressing.

Branch of Wetherspoon's that stretches across from a former chapel to another adjacent building. We remained in the area near to the bar and found it to be fairly bright and airy compared with most Wetherspoon's.

Staff didn't seem to be too attentive, preferring to serve a couple of lads who had arrived after me, behind whom a queue started to appear. A subsequent staff member arrived and was about to serve the next person in the newly-formed queue, before I had to intervene to place my order. Regular beers here are Greene King Abbot & IPA & Sharp's Doom Bar. 4 guest beers were Beartown Skinful, Goddard's Fuggle-Dee-Dum, Nelson's Shipwrecked & Salopian Darwin's Origin. Ciders were Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon & Weston's Old Rosie.

We ordered food on the app. This came fairly swiftly, but wasn't up to much.

As describe below. Nothing spectacular about this one, but it was generally friendly and the bouncers were somewhat under-employed given the peaceful atmosphere. The ale selection was unexciting, so we settled for the Doombar which appeared to be the best offer. Good enough to visit for a few beers, and the 1AM closing time makes it a useful place for a final call.

Two building joined as one ,with the righthand a former small theatre but looking like a chapel. There is a balcony, roped off on my visit, and a fine vaulted roof in timber.Close to the bar are lots of high tables, then some dining tables before a small rise to a back snug with a woodburner and a rear dining area in a couple of sections with what looked like table service. It's all quite upmarket for a 'spoons, and there is a real beer garden.
There are 2 banks of 6 handpumps but Doom Bar,GK IPA and Abbott are doubled up,three guests were "available soon" aaaaagh, leaving a choice of a festival International IPA,Wychwood Hobgoblin,Rocket Vostok Stout and a superb Oakham Velvet Claws which saved the trip and great value at £2.29.
With two of the "available soon" guests also from Oakham,it is possible ale selection here may well justify including this on a trip around town.

Large Spoons with the bar on the right as you come in. Usual selection of beers. The toilets are not upstairs for once.

This new Spoons is quite obviously two buildings joined together so the obvious assumption is that the building away from the bar is the hotel but this is not the case. The hotel is a brand new building at the rear that looks like a wooden box from the pub.
The right building is the main bar area with the servery along the right side a basic patio at the front and a more decorative one at the back. This room is fairly typical for a newer Spoons but there are a couple of fancy chandeliers above the bar. Some steps or a lift lead up to the other building which is a nice carpeted wood panelled area. There was a smell of paint and some of the doors looked unfinished so it would seem that some work is still going on.
Although the bar has twelve hand pumps the choice was limited with the IPA version of the Trio Of Doom and a cider doubled up, one available soon, Butcombe Bitter, Hawkshead Cumbrian 5 Hop and a festival beer. I went for the 5 Hop which was in good nick but was labelled as £2.49 when it should have been £2.79. Like most new Spoons the food club prices are dearer than normal. The guest ciders here are cheap at £2.65.
This isn't a bad Spoons but the beer choice let it down.
