Will Larter left this review about The Owl

Country pub in a lovely village, set on the side of a hill. Built, like all the village, of local stone, with the interior decorated in subdued blues, with flag stones around the wooden topped bar and bare floorboards elsewhere. Three hand pumps with Timothy Taylor Landlord and Theakston Best Bitter regulars and the third hand pump having a beer from Helmsley Brewery, Howardian Gold at the time of my visit. I was going to go for the Landlord until I saw it was £5.50 a pint, so I had the Helmsley at £4 and it was very good (NBSS 4). I could have done without the lamp fittings styled like antlers, and the real stag's head beside the bar back is just weird but I suppose inevitable in country pubs. The real bug bear for me, knocking it down from a 7 to a 6, was the background music, which became more irritating the longer I stayed.

Old Boots left this review about The Inn at Hawnby

A single public bar at the front road side with a well regarded, judging by the framed awards, restaurant at the rear.  The bar is simply and traditionally furnished with benches, a mix of tables, and a couple of leather armchairs by the piano. Three pulls on the counter serve Yorkshire beers, Timothy Taylors Landlord, Black Sheep Bitter and another traditional bitter from nearby Helmsley, Yorkshire Legend and in good nick. In spite of the slightly pretentious name it's quite down to earth in the bar, walkers are welcome and the prices are reasonable enough for a pub in the deepest North Yorks Moors . Other than the award certificates the room is decorated with photos and prints of the locality, antlers and old maps.
